August in Nairobi has its own fashion language. It is less about following a single aesthetic and more about how people layer, interpret and make a look their own.
These are the styles defining the season.
1. Afro-Bohemian: More Is More
Afro-Bohemian has dominated the everyday scene in Nairobi, and its appeal lies in abundance. Flowing dresses, oversized shirts, crochet tops, wide-leg trousers, stacked jewellery and scarves come together to create a look that feels textured, earthy and deliberately eclectic.
It is often described as artsy because of its multitude of elements. In reality, the jewellery, fabric, hair, colour and accessories work together to create depth.
If skirts are your go-to, think maxi lengths, wrap tops and waist chains in gold or beads, drawing attention to the waist without making the look feel overly constructed. Keep the hair natural or opt for braids, but do not be afraid to decorate them. Coral beads, gold charms and other small details can transform an otherwise familiar hairstyle.
The scarf is equally versatile. Wear it around the head, loosely around the neck or tied into the hair. Then there are the cowries, assorted beaded bangles and layered bracelets you already have in your jewellery box. Wear them. Mix different sizes, textures and colours.
The rule, however, is that abundance should never become an excuse for poor quality. If you are choosing crochet, make sure it is well made. Pay attention to the colour, texture and construction. Loose threads, stretched stitches and pieces beginning to pull apart will immediately cheapen the look.
The beauty of Afro-Bohemian is not simply in having more. It is in knowing how to make more feel intentional.
2. Clothes That Look Like Paintings
There is something particularly striking about clothing that knows when to stop.

The high-low combination remains one of the easiest ways to make an outfit feel contemporary.
